This in itself is a challenge because to build a good website you can’t just understand the systems, you also need to understand and create many other aspects of website building such as strategy, content and design as well as user experience. .So here are 10 things you need to know BEFORE you build a website. But for now, let’s focus on giving you a list so you have a better idea of what you’ll need to consider before you get started.
Step 1 – Strategy
The first step is the one that people often struggle with the most. Once you get past that, you’ll have an awesome strategy that will serve as the foundation for everything else that needs to be done. A big problem that people face is that they don’t really know what they want when they start out. They know they need a website and have a vague idea of what purpose the build a website should serve, but haven’t taken the time to map out what they want to show the world about themselves and their business. Therefore, it is imperative that you do so before you start building your website.
The point of all this is to create a website that will be successful. To do so, you’ll need to take a moment to think about who you are, what you’re passionate about, and what the core values of your business are. If you don’t know who you are, how will you know what you need to create? If you don’t make it clear, this ambiguity will show to your website visitors. Always remember that when you place your website, you are sending a message to your clients, customers and visitors. It’s up to you whether that message is clear and professional or confusing and disorganized. That’s why it’s so important that you start by implementing a successful website strategy. Step 2 – Customer Journey
Once you’ve established the core values your business and/or website should be based on, and you know the message you want to send to people visiting your website, you can begin to imagine what your site should contain. It’s time to start considering what type of journey you’re taking people through when they get to your website. First, you’ll want to consider what your visitors’ initial impression will be when they land on your homepage or landing page. After all, first impressions are everything, right? Therefore, it is one of the most important details to consider when planning your website. Again, this should all be based on the single message you choose to communicate to people through your website.
Another important aspect of all this is to have a clear idea of who the optimal visitor to your site is. Who are you targeting and who is likely to use your product or service? A substantial part of what you include on your site will be based on the answer to this question. For example, statistics show that young men and women spend the vast majority of their time watching videos on YouTube. This will determine the type of content you will want to include when creating your site.
Step 3 – Sitemaps
When you’re planning your website and considering user experience, you’ll want to start mapping out all the pages you want to include. Chances are you have a general idea of what pages would be best to have on your website, but putting pen to paper and drawing it out will help you get a bird’s eye view of what pages you should create.
It is recommended that you create a mind map or flowchart to outline how you will build your website page by page. Of course, you can draw your mind map on anything from a piece of paper to a napkin, but if you prefer a tablet to store your ideas, a great app you might want to consider is called concepts. I personally use my iPad and drafts to quickly and digitally draw a sitemap.
No matter how you approach mapping your site, you’ll want to start by figuring out what the main categories will be in your top-level menu. Then start carefully mapping out what pages should be part of each section of your website. Make sure you take the time to consider what the user experience will be like at each stage and whether they will be able to easily find what they need when mapping out your site.
Step 4 – Wireframes
The next step you will take is to start building your website using wireframes. People often struggle with this action step, but the key is to keep it simple. Each page of your website should have one goal. This way, your users and visitors won’t get confused when browsing the site. Remember, a confused consumer doesn’t buy. Each page must therefore be set up to make it easy for the user to find what they need and ensure that they move forward and purchase your product or service. Step 5 – Content
The content you provide when build a website will not only drive more people to your site, but will also make them stay longer and interact more with your brand. This is extremely important when it comes to getting people to buy more, as well as helping your site rank better on search engines like Google.
