7 reasons why you don’t need a flagship smartphone
Flagship smartphones, flagship smartphones, flagship smartphones. This phrase dazzles the eyes. Everyone enthusiastically discusses these same flagship smartphones, someone even buys them, and many just look at them and, dream, save money, get into loans. The question arises: is it worth taking such a device for 30 thousand rupees? Or maybe you should turn on the common-sense mode and look at something cheaper? Today we will get into the shoes of a doubting buyer dreaming of flagship smartphones and try to dissuade ourselves from buying it.
Below are seven reasons that make purchasing an expensive smartphone a very dubious step.
1. Super new technologies = unexpected problems
It is in top-end devices that manufacturers, first of all, implement their most complex and daring ideas. On the one hand, it is pleasant for the user – some newfangled features sometimes really make smartphones more convenient. And the very fact of owning a mega-technological thing is also most often pleasing.
However, there is also a downside, much less rosy. New technologies, which are saturated with flagship devices, are often downright cheesy. And in fact, they do not deliver much pleasure. Rather, the opposite is true. For example, in-screen fingerprint scanners are now slower and generally less stable than those on rear panels. Bright and saturated AMOLED screens tend to fade over time. Super-powerful chipsets are not always able to demonstrate their potential due to cooling problems. And so on – the list can be supplemented for a very long time.
Buying a top-end device, you run the risk of taking part in beta testing of the bright ideas of the developers. And at their own expense.
2. Cameras of flagship smartphones: benefit only when shooting at night
In recent years, smartphone developers have been improving options related to night shooting with might and main. We admit: they are very successful in this. The new flagship models of Huawei, the top-end Samsung devices, the representatives of the Google Pixel family – they all perfectly shoot at night. Straight sight for sore eyes.
However, the question is different – is this notorious evening and night shooting so important for the average user? And in the daytime smartphones for 15-20 and 30-50 thousand Rupees are photographed quite comparable. They shoot text almost equally clearly. Produces similar results in landscape and macro mode. Yes, picky comrades will surely find the difference, but only if they arm themselves with a microscope, a police dog, and a collection of stories about Sh. Holmes. If you do not delve into the jungle, it turns out that the possibilities of a high-quality “middle peasant” for 15-20 thousand are quite enough for 90% of consumers. Well, the maniacs remaining in the minority should look towards the flagships. Or buy yourself a separate camera.
Is it worth overpaying a couple of tens of thousands of Rupees for a smartphone that shoots better at night than others?
3. Slots in flagship smartphones: leapfrog, confusion, and limitations
Today, none of the top-end devices can find separate slots for memory cards and SIM cards. That is so that you can put both a MicroSD card and two SIM cards at once. For some reason, Huawei has developed its format for memory cards, which are not so easy to find on the market. And many other top models do not support memory cards at all. How much onboard memory there is – so much will be. I do not like it? Take an even more expensive version with more built-in memory. Has your smartphone broken? It may not be possible to get your photos and videos out of his corpse – unless, of course, you have duplicated them into some cloud. And if there were a memory card, this valuable content could be stored on it …
In the mid-range models, everything is much cooler! Most often they have a slot for MicroSD, moreover, there are enough devices with separate slots, allowing you to install three cards at once. And this is extremely convenient.
Memory cards are almost always a problem in flagship smartphones.
4. Cases of flagship smartphones: fragile glass
Almost all flagship smartphones today are made of glass – exceptions are vanishingly few. Such models look very cool, you can’t argue with that. But with practicality, everything is very difficult for them. Simply because the chances of seriously damaging the case in their case are exactly two times greater than in the case of a middle-class device, where only the front panel is covered with glass, while the back is made of aluminum. With scratches – the same: scratching a glass flagship is much easier than a “middle peasant”. At worst, scratches and scuffs look much nobler on aluminum than on glass.
So it turns out that if you need exceptional beauty and incredibly pleasant tactile sensations – yes, you should look towards glass flagships. If practicality is at the forefront, then welcome to the models of the middle class, where winged metal still rules the ball. And no, you shouldn’t nod in the direction of the cases that can protect the pristine exterior of top-end devices. That is so, but what is the point of buying a beautiful glass gadget if all its beauty is hidden under a layer of silicone?
The fashionable glass case of top-end smartphones will either have to be protected or covered with a cover.
5. Iron of flagship smartphones: only suitable for benchmarks
Powerful chipsets are good, by and large, only for measuring the length of bars in benchmark graphs. It is, of course, nice when your pocket friend gives out more than 300 thousand in AnTuTu, but in practice, there is practically nowhere to put such power. On rare occasions, flagship smartphones are indeed capable of demonstrating several (just a few!) More beautiful graphics in games, but not always. At the same time, super-powerful models are discharged faster and, in some cases, also very noticeably heat up.
For the vast majority of tasks that the average user solves on a smartphone, Qualcomm Snapdragon 6XX chipsets or some eight-core MediaTek solutions are enough. If you do not plan to play, then platforms with four cores will do. True, today they are used only in the cheapest smartphones with a price of much less than 10 thousand.
You never use the full potential of your smartphone’s powerful hardware.
6. Batteries of flagship smartphones: only a day and a half of battery life
The internal layout of flagship devices implies the use of a lot of additional elements (“extra” sensors, a cooling system, a bunch of camera modules, and so on), so there is no more room for a really powerful battery. And today, devices with a price of 30 thousand Rupees and more are usually equipped with batteries with a capacity of 3000-3700 mAh. On the one hand, it seems to be not very little, but the most powerful hardware, a bunch of gluttonous components that cannot be found in cheaper models, and huge screens do their job – the flagships live without an outlet for an average of a day and a half.
Whether it is a middle-class model. Even with the same battery capacity (in the region of 3000-3700 mAh), coupled with a less subtle chipset process technology and a less economical screen (IPS instead of AMOLED), they work longer – one and a half, or even twice. In addition, in the middle class, you can find smartphones with 4000 and even 5000 mAh batteries. Such models will easily wipe the nose of any flagship.
Even good software optimization will not replace a powerful battery.
7. Connectors in flagship smartphones: and again limitations
Top-end devices today are practical without a 3.5 mm headphone jack. There are exceptions – for example, the flagships of Samsung, LG, and Meizu. But there are few of them. And in the next generations of devices from these manufacturers, the mini-jack may not be available either. Is this good or bad? Yes, it’s not very cool: many of us have our favorite headphones with a 3.5 mm plug for a long time, but most often there is no desire to buy wireless “ears”. Adapters USB Type-C -> 3.5 mm, as a rule, are not able to qualitatively solve the issue of compatibility – they noticeably spoil the sound. Meanwhile, there are quite a few wired headphones with a USB Type-C interface on sale, and most often these are not cheap models.
Against this background, affordable smartphones seem much more versatile. They can work with conventional headphones equipped with a 3.5 mm plug, and with wireless. And some models with a USB Type-C port can perceive “ears” with such an interface – if suddenly you still have them on your farm.
